How To Plant Asparagus?

Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil

Clear the planting area of weeds and debris

Test and amend the soil to a pH of about 6.5 to 7.5

Dig a trench about 6 to 12 inches deep and 12 to 18 inches wide

Form a small ridge of soil along the bottom of the trench

Place asparagus crowns on the ridge, spreading the roots out

Space crowns 12 to 18 inches apart

Cover the crowns with 2 to 3 inches of soil

Water thoroughly after planting

Add more soil gradually as shoots grow until the trench is filled

Keep the bed weed-free and evenly moist

Mulch around the plants to conserve moisture and suppress weeds

Avoid harvesting for the first 2 years

Begin light harvesting in the third year

Cut back dead foliage in late fall or early spring
