Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil
Clear the planting area of weeds and debris
Test and amend the soil to a pH of about 6.5 to 7.5
Dig a trench about 6 to 12 inches deep and 12 to 18 inches wide
Form a small ridge of soil along the bottom of the trench
Place asparagus crowns on the ridge, spreading the roots out
Space crowns 12 to 18 inches apart
Cover the crowns with 2 to 3 inches of soil
Water thoroughly after planting
Add more soil gradually as shoots grow until the trench is filled
Keep the bed weed-free and evenly moist
Mulch around the plants to conserve moisture and suppress weeds
Avoid harvesting for the first 2 years
Begin light harvesting in the third year
Cut back dead foliage in late fall or early spring
