How to Become a Notary Public in Illinois?

Be at least 18 years old

Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident

Be a resident of Illinois or work in Illinois and live in a neighboring state

Be able to read and write English

Not have a felony conviction unless your civil rights have been restored

Complete the Illinois notary application

Obtain a surety bond if required

Submit the application and required fee to the Illinois Secretary of State

Receive your commission from the Illinois Secretary of State

Purchase a notary seal and journal if desired or required for your practice

Follow Illinois notary laws and renew your commission before it expires
