Slice the mushrooms evenly
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat
Add butter, oil, or both
Add the mushrooms in a single layer
Let them cook without stirring for 2 to 3 minutes
Stir and continue cooking until browned and tender
Add minced garlic if desired
Season with salt and black pepper
Add thyme, rosemary, or parsley if desired
Deglaze the pan with beef broth, wine, or steak drippings if desired
Cook until the liquid reduces slightly
Serve the mushrooms over the steak or on the side
