Clean the mushrooms with a damp paper towel and trim the stems if needed

Slice the mushrooms evenly

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat

Add butter or oil to the skillet

Add the mushrooms in a single layer

Cook without stirring for 2 to 3 minutes

Stir and continue cooking until the mushrooms release their moisture

Cook until the moisture evaporates and the mushrooms turn golden brown

Add minced garlic, salt, and black pepper

Stir and cook for 30 to 60 seconds

Add fresh herbs if desired

Remove from heat and serve immediately
