Take warm sitz baths for 10–15 minutes several times a day
Apply a cold pack to the area for short periods
Use over-the-counter hemorrhoid creams or suppositories as directed
Take oral pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen if safe for you
Use witch hazel pads to soothe irritation
Keep the area clean and gently pat dry after bowel movements
Use soft, unscented toilet paper or moist wipes without alcohol or fragrance
Avoid straining during bowel movements
Increase fiber intake with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, or fiber supplements
Drink plenty of water
Exercise regularly to help prevent constipation
Avoid sitting on the toilet for long periods
Use a stool softener if constipation is contributing
Wear loose, breathable cotton underwear
Avoid heavy lifting and activities that worsen symptoms
Seek medical care if pain is severe, persistent, or accompanied by bleeding or a lump that will not go away
